What is MEP?
MEP stands for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing. MEP constitutes a critical element of interior design, serving the comfort, health, and safety of the people who occupy the space.
Water Supply and Drainage Systems
Particularly vital in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas requiring water, plumbing systems must be both efficient and seamlessly integrated into the overall design.
All electrical components — including lighting, power outlets, and the associated wiring systems.
Effective lighting design and the strategic placement of power outlets are essential to both the functionality and the interior environment.
ELECTRICAL
HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).
Interior designers must ensure these systems are well integrated without compromising design elements.

6 CORE ISSUES DRAWN FROM THE REALITY OF VIETNAM'S MEP INDUSTRY
1. Conflict and lack of coordination between disciplines
(Clash Detection)
Loose coordination between Architecture, Structure, and MEP from the earliest design stage gives rise to countless conflicts: pipes colliding with beams, air ducts encroaching on ceiling heights, electrical panels placed in the wrong locations. The consequence is on-site demolition and rework, escalating costs and delaying schedules.
2. Barriers to the adoption of BIM technology
(Building Information Modeling)
Although the Government has established a mandatory roadmap, BIM implementation still faces numerous obstacles: high costs for software, hardware, and training; many projects use BIM merely to "redraw" attractive 3D documentation, without harnessing core values such as clash management, quantity take-off (5D), or operations management (7D).
3. Pressure from continuously changing technical standards
and regulations
QCVN 06 (Fire Prevention and Fighting) is being progressively tightened, forcing many newly approved design documents to be reworked. Meanwhile, the green building trend (LEED, LOTUS, etc.) under QCVN 09 demands the integration of smart solutions (BMS, DALI, Smart Lighting), yet many domestic firms' system-integration design capabilities remain inadequate.
4. Distortion of material quality and the Value Engineering equation
Price competition pressure leads many contractors to submit low bids and subsequently substitute inferior materials. While the initial investment cost is low, long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) costs prove far higher, causing losses for the investor.
5. A shortage of MEP Coordinators with a holistic vision
Vietnam does not lack engineers specialized in individual disciplines, but it does lack MEP Coordinators—professionals capable of orchestrating all systems together. A "stay in your own lane" mindset leaves construction teams working in isolation, competing for technical space, and passing difficulties on to one another.
6. Testing and Commissioning is not given due regard
Testing & Commissioning (T&C) is often treated as a final formality and squeezed by the schedule. The absence of a rigorous, independent T&C process (verifying the interlock between fire prevention, elevators, backup power, air conditioning, etc.) means that completed projects, once operational, are prone to faults and fail to achieve their designed performance.
